Let's face it... home computing and the Internet have changed the way we live - most of us would agree for the better. But they can also be a cause of stress, frustration and family arguments if everyone wants to use them at the same time. Sanderum has the solution... There was a time when one desktop PC in the home seemed indulgent. But now that we and our families have become so dependent on them for home working, school work and leisure, there can be several PCs, laptops, PDAs, games machines and other digital devices in every household. And with our networks of printers, scanners and other periferals, who isn't familiar with the associated tangle of wires and phone extension cables running around the house and up the stairs to the children's rooms. When everyone wants to use email and the Internet at the same time then tensions can easily rise especially if you have work to do while the children are doing their homework (or downloading MP3 music files for their iPods more likely). And what if you just want to use the phone? No more wires, no more waiting Now with two technologies coming together, there's a simple solution... Wireless Broadband. Lose all those unsightly, intrusive wires and cables and have your PCs, laptops, PDAs, printers and scanners communicating and synchronised via a wireless network. Combine that with wireless broadband Internet access and while the children are emailing their friends from their rooms, you can do that online shop on your PDA from the kitchen or download and print off that important project from the garden if that's where you and your laptop happen to be. Everyone can be online at the same time so no one has to wait. No more wires, no more waiting, no more arguments. Viruses! The havoc they wreak has been widely publicised and can be devastating. But even if your anti-virus software is up-to-date, your business may still be vulnerable. Sanderum can help... How might I be at risk? The integrity of our computer systems and the data they contain is essential to business success. The effects of data loss, computer crashes and compromised security have seriously damaged many companies and the time it takes to recover can be significant. So it's crucial to keep our systems protected against viral attack by subscribing to effective anti-virus software and keeping it up to date. But that may not be enough. Computer operating systems like Windows and associated applications have vulnerabilities which can be targeted and exploited by hackers or by the effects of other viruses. In order for anti-virus software to work effectively, these 'holes' have to be stopped or 'patched'. Even when anti-virus software has been running, a large number of virus attacks are successful where users have not implemented the necessary patches. Where are the weaknesses in my system? The most common means by which viruses attack are by exploiting the vulnerabilities in the Windows operating system and certain integrated applications such as: Microsoft Outlook Most viruses arrive via email and as Outlook Express is one of the most widely used email clients, it is a favourite of hackers. Infected emails are made to appear genuine by gleaning genuine addresses and subject headings as they travel, enticing recipients to open them, thus unleashing their damaging content. But some viruses have made use of vulnerabilities in Outlook to attack systems without the email ever being opened! Microsoft Internet Explorer Once lured to a website controlled by a hacker, weaknesses in IE can mean that while you are browsing the site, malicious files might be downloaded undetected or password files may be stolen. System files Viruses can gain control of your system by renaming system and library files. Microsoft Visual Basic is an engine that runs necessary scripts to complete everyday actions on your computer. If unpatched, it can just as easily run the hacker's script. Macros Word provides macros as a shortcut to executing certain actions in creating files. These have proved to be popular for hackers trying to find an entry route for viruses. What can I do? The solution is to plug those holes. Microsoft regularly make updates and patches available via their website whenever vulnerabilities become apparent, and service packs when there are a number of updates/patches published together. But just keeping up-to-date and implementing all the updates, patches and service packs, not to mention the latest anti-virus updates can seem like a full time IT job in itself! We can help Make sure your systems are up-to-date. If you would like us to help you implement the latest patches and updates or if you would simply like more information about the current situation and how it might relate to you, contact Matt@sanderum.com. The potential benefits of protecting your systems cannot be overstated. The risks cannot be ignored. |
